North Star is a residential experience held at hotel/conference centers and university settings around the United States preceded by several modules of online learning at your own pace. The innovative blended learning format allows students to begin immersing in leadership concepts prior to the residency, which affords more time for experiential learning and relationship building during the residency.
Our courses focus on leadership and ethics, contemporary issues/challenges in the policing community, wellness/mindfulness/fitness, and a specialization course of the student’s choosing (e.g. ethical decision-making, constitutional law). Our faculty comprise seasoned educators with graduate and doctoral degrees and substantial careers in the policing field. While American agencies fill the majority of events, members of the international law enforcement community represent a critical component of the North Star program.

Based on the renowned text, Every Officer is a Leader, the online modules address the shifting dynamics of public service and need for a reappraisal of leadership styles in 21st Century policing. Students will explore the profound impact of leadership on organizational behavior at the individual, team, and organizational levels in justice, public safety and security agencies in this era of globalization and enhanced security. Using a multi-source and multi-disciplinary approach presented through a combination of theory and practical examples, law enforcement leaders are shown how to assess their skills, plan for enhanced leadership effectiveness, and effectively implement processes to create a
“leadership and learning organization.”

Residency
CurriculumThe North Star curriculum consists of several online modules and four collegiate-style courses in the residential component. But the curriculum is much more than academics. On the second Saturday of the residency, students engage in a tabletop crisis simulation facilitated by experts in the field. Every Wednesday evening, we come together for food, drink, and much deserved relaxation enriched with a renowned guest speaker. And before the North Star residency even starts, students complete several online learning modules and begin a capstone project that eventually integrates the entire North Star experience providing a tangible product to return to their home agencies.
